A significant rise in temperatures is expected across Pakistan during the Eid ul Adha holidays, with weather officials warning that moderate to severe heatwave conditions could affect large parts of the country, including Karachi.
High-Pressure System Expected to Trigger Heatwave
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), a high-pressure system is expected to develop in the upper atmosphere on May 25 and is likely to strengthen further from May 26. As a result, temperatures are expected to increase considerably between May 25 and May 31.
Meteorologists say such weather systems often trap warm air over a region, leading to prolonged periods of extreme heat. These conditions can also reduce cloud formation and rainfall activity, allowing temperatures to remain elevated for several days.
Several Areas May Experience Extreme Temperatures
The PMD has forecast that temperatures in many regions could remain 5°C to 7°C above normal levels.
Areas including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore and Gujrat may record temperatures between 42°C and 45°C.
Meanwhile, some of the hottest regions in southern and central Pakistan, particularly districts in Sindh, southern Punjab and parts of Balochistan, could experience temperatures reaching 47°C to 50°C.
Although Karachi’s coastal location generally keeps temperatures lower than interior regions, weather officials have warned that the city may still face very hot conditions, with temperatures expected to remain between 35°C and 38°C. Higher humidity levels in Karachi could also make the weather feel more uncomfortable than the actual temperature.

Night Temperatures Also Expected to Increase
The PMD has indicated that not only daytime temperatures but also night temperatures are expected to remain higher than normal. Warm nights reduce the body’s ability to recover from heat stress and can increase health risks, particularly during extended heatwaves.
Health and Safety Precautions Issued
Weather authorities have urged the public, particularly children, women and senior citizens, to take preventive measures during the forecast period.
People have been advised to:
- Avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm
- Drink sufficient water and remain hydrated
- Wear light and breathable clothing
- Limit strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours
Farmers have also been advised to plan agricultural activities according to weather conditions and ensure adequate care for livestock.
Officials additionally warned that electricity usage could increase significantly during the heatwave period and encouraged careful use of water and energy resources.
Authorities have been asked to remain alert and take precautionary measures to avoid any emergency situations during the Eid holiday period.
