Former Afghanistan fast bowler Shapoor Zadran has passed away at the age of 38 following a prolonged illness, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed on Tuesday.
Zadran, who was widely respected for his fiery pace and match-winning performances, played a significant role in Afghanistan’s emergence as a competitive force in international cricket. His death has prompted tributes from across the cricketing world in recognition of his contributions to the sport.
Battled a Rare Immune System Disorder
According to the Afghanistan Cricket Board, Zadran had been suffering from Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare and potentially life-threatening disorder in which the immune system becomes overactive, causing severe inflammation and damage to multiple organs.
Media reports said he had been receiving specialized medical treatment in the Delhi-NCR region of India for several months.
Zadran first fell ill in October 2025 and, after initial medical consultations in Afghanistan, travelled to India for advanced treatment. Although his condition showed signs of improvement and he was discharged from hospital, he reportedly suffered a relapse about three weeks later.
A Pioneer of Afghanistan Cricket
Born on 8 July 1987 in Logar Province, Shapoor Zadran is remembered as one of the cricketers who helped transform Afghanistan from an emerging cricket nation into a respected international team.
The left-arm fast bowler earned a reputation for generating pace, swinging the new ball, and making crucial early breakthroughs. His performances were instrumental during Afghanistan’s journey from ICC Associate Member status to becoming an ICC Full Member.
Successful International Career
Zadran made his One-Day International (ODI) debut against the Netherlands in 2009, immediately making an impact by claiming 4 wickets for 24 runs.
During an international career spanning more than a decade, he represented Afghanistan in:
- 44 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), taking 43 wickets
- 36 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), claiming 37 wickets
He also represented Afghanistan in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cups of 2010, 2012, and 2016, leading the team’s pace attack during each tournament.
Memorable Performances on the World Stage
One of Zadran’s standout performances came during the 2010 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, where he dismissed Indian opening batsmen Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, demonstrating Afghanistan’s growing competitiveness against established cricketing nations.
Perhaps the defining moment of his career came during the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
He finished the tournament as Afghanistan’s leading wicket-taker with 10 wickets and played a decisive role in the country’s historic victory over Scotland, scoring the winning runs to secure Afghanistan’s first-ever win at a Cricket World Cup.

Shapoor Zadran’s contributions extended far beyond statistics. He belonged to the pioneering generation of Afghan cricketers who inspired millions by helping establish the country on the global cricket stage despite years of hardship and limited resources.
