KARACHI: Several areas of Karachi could experience water shortages after a power breakdown at the Dhabeji pumping station temporarily disrupted operations, the Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) said on Sunday.
The Dhabeji pumping station, which serves as the city’s primary water supply facility, depends on a continuous electricity supply. Even brief power interruptions can immediately affect water distribution across the metropolis.
Cable fault disrupts pumping operations
According to a KWSC spokesperson, the outage occurred in the third phase of the Dhabeji pumping station due to a cable fault.
Technical teams are currently carrying out repair work to restore the damaged cable and resume normal operations.
The spokesperson said the fault forced the temporary shutdown of three pumps at the facility.
Water supply reduced by 75 million gallons
The disruption is expected to reduce Karachi’s daily water supply by approximately 75 million gallons per day (MGD).
KWSC warned that the temporary reduction in pumping capacity could affect water availability in several parts of the city until power is fully restored.
Areas likely to be affected
According to the water utility, the following areas may experience low water pressure or temporary shortages:
- North Nazimabad
- Nazimabad
- Gulberg Town
- New Karachi
- Landhi
- Korangi
- Parts of Scheme 33
Residents in these localities have been advised to use water carefully until the supply system returns to normal.
KWSC coordinating with KE
The KWSC said it is continuously monitoring the situation and remains in close contact with K-Electric (KE) to ensure the earliest possible restoration of electricity at the pumping station.
The corporation also appealed to citizens to avoid unnecessary water usage and conserve available supplies during the disruption.
Earlier this month, another power outage at the K-2 pumping station resulted in the shutdown of three major pumps, temporarily affecting Karachi’s water distribution network.
