Johnny Depp could be preparing to return to one of the most iconic roles of his career, with talks reportedly underway for his comeback as Captain Jack Sparrow in the sixth installment of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

The news was confirmed by longtime producer Jerry Bruckheimer during Disney’s D23 Expo, where he revealed that discussions with Depp are taking place while work continues on the screenplay.

“We’re talking with Johnny, we’re working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done,” Bruckheimer told reporters.

The announcement is likely to generate significant excitement among fans, as Depp’s portrayal of the eccentric pirate became the defining feature of the franchise.

Johnny Depp Could Return as Jack Sparrow

Depp played Captain Jack Sparrow in all five previous Pirates of the Caribbean films, beginning with The Curse of the Black Pearl in 2003.

His performance turned Sparrow into one of the most recognisable characters in modern blockbuster cinema, combining comedy, adventure and the character’s distinctive unpredictable personality.

However, Depp’s future with the franchise has remained uncertain for several years.

His relationship with Disney became complicated following his highly publicised legal battle with former wife Amber Heard, including their 2022 defamation trial.

The latest comments from Bruckheimer nevertheless suggest that the studio and the actor are now discussing the possibility of working together again.

Margot Robbie Could Lead the New Story

According to Deadline, the proposed sixth film may not be built entirely around Jack Sparrow.

Sources cited by the publication indicate that the story is expected to focus primarily on Margot Robbie’s character, with Depp potentially appearing in a supporting role.

If that approach is adopted, the film would represent more of an evolution of the franchise rather than a direct continuation centred exclusively on Sparrow.

This could allow Disney to introduce a new generation of characters while bringing back one of the series’ most popular figures.

Franchise Has Earned Billions Worldwide

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been one of Disney’s major global film properties.

The most recent installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, was released in 2017 and earned approximately $795.9 million worldwide.

Although it was the lowest-grossing entry in the series, the franchise as a whole has generated around $4.5 billion globally, demonstrating the enormous commercial appeal of the films.

The possibility of Depp returning could therefore provide a major boost to interest in a sixth installment.

Depp’s Hollywood Comeback Continues

The potential Pirates return comes as Depp continues rebuilding his career following years of legal and personal controversy.

The actor is also scheduled to return to the big screen later this year in Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, in which he will portray the classic character Ebenezer Scrooge.

The film is scheduled for release on November 13.

A return as Jack Sparrow would represent another significant step in Depp’s Hollywood comeback and could reunite him with one of the roles most closely associated with his career.

For now, however, Disney has not officially confirmed that Depp has signed on to Pirates of the Caribbean 6. Bruckheimer’s comments indicate that discussions are ongoing, while the screenplay is still being developed.

If an agreement is reached, Captain Jack Sparrow could once again set sail — potentially alongside a new generation of Pirates of the Caribbean characters.
