Nation Marks Day of Remembrance
Across Pakistan, Shia Muslims are marking the Chehlum of Imam Hussain (AS) — the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) — and the martyrs of Karbala with deep reverence.
The day commemorates the 40th day after Ashura, when Imam Hussain and his companions were martyred in 680 CE at the Battle of Karbala in present-day Iraq.
Throughout the country, mourning processions are being held, accompanied by majalis (religious gatherings). These events feature elegies, recitations, and chest-beating rituals to honour the sacrifices made in Karbala.
Lahore: Chehlum and Urs of Data Ganj Bakhsh
In Lahore, the Chehlum coincides with the final day of the Urs (death anniversary) of Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh Ali Hujwiri, a revered Sufi saint. This overlap has led to an even greater influx of devotees in the city.
Punjab’s Inspector General of Police, Dr Usman Anwar, stated that 644 majalis and 392 processions are scheduled for the day. Over 37,000 police personnel have been deployed to ensure safety.
The IGP urged people from all sects to demonstrate unity and religious harmony to maintain a peaceful atmosphere.
Karachi: Central Procession from Nishtar Park
In Karachi, the main Chehlum procession will start from Nishtar Park and proceed along its traditional route before concluding. For security reasons, MA Jinnah Road and surrounding streets have been sealed off with containers.
Shops along the procession path have been inspected by the Bomb Disposal Unit and sealed. More than 4,000 police officers are on duty to guard the event.
Authorities have also imposed Section 144, banning pillion riding on motorcycles. In addition, mobile phone services have been suspended in several areas to prevent potential security threats.
Peshawar: Dual Afternoon Processions
In Peshawar, two major processions will begin at 3:00 PM. The first will start from Imambargah Akhundabad in Mohallah Nobajori, Kohati. The second will set out from Kocha Risaldar in Qissa Khwani Bazaar.
Both will follow their traditional routes before returning to their respective imambargahs. The city administration has prepared a foolproof security plan, including drone surveillance and other advanced security measures to ensure public safety.

Quetta: Security Tight for Central Gathering
In Quetta, the central Chehlum procession will be taken out from Imambargah Alamdar Road, comprising 22 organised contingents. The event is being monitored through CCTV cameras, while over 5,000 personnel from the police, Balochistan Constabulary, and Frontier Corps are deployed for security.
The procession will conclude at Bihisht-e-Zainab cemetery. Another procession from Wali Asr Imambargah in Hazara Town will move along traditional routes to end at the Hazara cemetery.
Security as a Priority
Given the large crowds and the sensitive nature of the day, authorities nationwide have prioritised security. Road closures, traffic diversions, surveillance, and communication restrictions are among the preventive measures in place.
Officials stress that these steps are intended to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure that mourners can participate safely.
Religious and Cultural Significance
The Chehlum is not only a religious occasion for Shia Muslims but also a broader cultural event in Pakistan. Many Sunnis, Sufis, and other communities join in or express solidarity, reflecting the historical and spiritual importance of Imam Hussain’s stand for justice.
In cities like Lahore, where the event coincides with Sufi Urs celebrations, the atmosphere is a mix of solemn mourning and devotional gatherings.
Looking Ahead
Authorities say security will remain heightened into the night as processions conclude. Religious leaders have called for continued unity and mutual respect among all sects.
The day ends with renewed calls for peace, compassion, and the remembrance of Karbala’s message — standing firm in the face of injustice.
