Parents across the world often complain about rising school fees. Yet, the figures pale in comparison to those charged by Switzerland’s Institut Le Rosey—considered the most expensive school in the world. For many, the fees are nothing short of staggering.
A School for the Global Elite
Founded in 1880, Institut Le Rosey is located in Rolle, in Switzerland’s Vaud canton. Over the decades, it has built a reputation as one of the most exclusive boarding schools in the world.
Often described as the “Hogwarts for the rich,” the school is not just an educational institution. It is marketed as a complete lifestyle, accessible only to children from the wealthiest and most influential families. Admission is limited to those who not only meet academic standards but also fit a highly selective social profile.
History and Campuses
The school was established by Paul-Émile Carnal, who chose the location for its natural beauty and historical setting. Today, the main campus remains in Rolle, while a second winter campus is located in Gstaad, a famous ski resort village in the Bernese Oberland.
From January to March, students shift to this alpine campus to experience winter sports and activities. Another campus sits on the shores of Lake Geneva, adding to the institution’s prestige and scenic appeal.
Interestingly, until 1967 the school admitted only boys. It later expanded to include girls, though with separate facilities at the time.
Admission Standards and Annual Fees
Gaining entry into Institut Le Rosey is exceptionally difficult. Applicants are expected to be fluent in either English or French. They must demonstrate excellent academic records and show no signs of behavioral or learning disabilities. Each application requires a strong justification for why the student wishes to study there.
The fees are equally daunting. Annual boarding tuition stands at around $150,000 (over PKR 42 million). For day students, the cost is approximately $65,000 (about PKR 18 million).
Unlike some private schools that rely on donations or endowments, Le Rosey claims that all of its income comes directly from tuition fees. Late payments are reportedly not tolerated.
Student Body and Global Diversity
The school hosts nearly 400 students from 58 different countries. Each class is limited to a maximum of 20 students, ensuring personalised attention.
With nearly 90 teachers and more than 200 support staff, the student-to-staff ratio is among the most favourable worldwide. The entire operation is spread over a 28-hectare campus, making it one of the most expansive private school grounds in Europe.
