Saudi Jets Salute Shehbaz Sharif, Says Maryam Nawaz

Punjab Chief Minister contrasts Saudi honor with past humiliation of former prime minister

Saudi Welcome for Shehbaz Sharif

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif received an exceptional welcome during his recent visit to Saudi Arabia. According to her, Saudi fighter jets escorted his aircraft in a ceremonial salute — a gesture traditionally reserved for high-level dignitaries.

Speaking at the inauguration of an electric bus project in Sargodha, she contrasted this with the treatment of a former Pakistani prime minister, who, she claimed, had once been asked to disembark from a plane due to what she called “irresponsible conduct.” While she did not mention the individual by name, the remarks were widely seen as a pointed political reference.

“Pakistan is Earning Global Recognition”

Maryam Nawaz argued that under Shehbaz Sharif’s leadership, Pakistan is regaining respect on the world stage. She said the Saudi salute was evidence of growing international recognition for the country.

In sharp criticism of political rivals, she remarked that certain figures currently incarcerated in Adiala Jail remain “unaware that Pakistan has moved forward.” The reference was understood to be directed at former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been in custody facing multiple legal cases.

Relief Efforts During Punjab Floods

Highlighting her government’s achievements, Maryam Nawaz recalled the massive relief operations during recent historic floods in Punjab. She said provincial authorities successfully relocated 2.5 million people and 2.2 million livestock to safer areas.

She praised the efforts of rescue teams and government departments, emphasizing that the response had prevented large-scale casualties and agricultural devastation. Floods are a recurring challenge in Pakistan, where monsoon rains displace thousands every year.

Development Projects in Sargodha

Maryam Nawaz also announced new development initiatives for the city of Sargodha. These include the deployment of 33 electric buses to improve urban transport and reduce environmental pollution.

She further inaugurated the Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cardiology, a facility aimed at expanding healthcare access in central Punjab. According to her, such projects reflect the government’s commitment to modernizing infrastructure and improving public services.

Saudi-Pakistan Defense Agreement

Maryam Nawaz described Pakistan’s recent defense agreement with Saudi Arabia as a “historic diplomatic achievement.” She said the accord symbolized trust between the two countries and reinforced Pakistan’s special role as custodian of the Two Holy Mosques in Makkah and Madinah.

Saudi Arabia remains one of Pakistan’s closest allies, providing financial aid and hosting millions of Pakistani workers whose remittances are crucial for the economy. Military cooperation has also been a cornerstone of the relationship, with Pakistani officers historically training Saudi forces.

Political Undertones

While celebrating her administration’s progress, Maryam Nawaz used the occasion to criticize political opponents. Her speech reflected ongoing tensions between the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Observers note that the contrasting imagery — Shehbaz Sharif receiving a fighter jet salute abroad while another leader was “offloaded” at home — underlines how political figures frame narratives of dignity and humiliation to appeal to voters.

Broader Context

Pakistan is navigating a delicate balance between economic reforms and political instability. The country has been seeking stronger ties with Gulf states, particularly Saudi Arabia, to secure financial support and investment.

Maryam Nawaz’s remarks come at a time when Islamabad is negotiating further assistance from Riyadh, both in terms of energy supplies and balance-of-payment support. Publicly highlighting Saudi recognition of Shehbaz Sharif may also serve as a signal of stability and international backing at a time of domestic political polarization.
