Uncertainty continues over Bangladesh’s participation in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 as security concerns and scheduling disputes remain unresolved.

ICC Sets Deadline for Bangladesh

Bangladesh is expected to make a final decision on its participation in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup by January 21, according to media reports. The deadline was reportedly conveyed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) during meetings held in Dhaka with officials of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

During its second meeting with the ICC in a week, the BCB reaffirmed its willingness to take part in the tournament. However, it formally requested that Bangladesh’s matches be scheduled outside India due to security concerns, proposing co-host Sri Lanka as an alternative venue.

ICC Rejects Venue Change Request

The ICC has reportedly rejected Bangladesh’s request, assuring the BCB that there is no credible security threat to the team while touring and playing in India. As per ESPNcricinfo, the ICC has decided to keep Bangladesh in Group C and declined a proposal to move the team to Group B by swapping positions with Ireland.

Officials indicated that the ICC is awaiting a clear response from the BCB. Should Bangladesh ultimately refuse to travel to India, Scotland is likely to be named as the replacement team based on current international rankings.

Tight Schedule Adds Pressure

The matter has remained unresolved for nearly three weeks since the BCB formally raised its concerns on January 4. With the T20 World Cup scheduled to begin on February 7, time is running short for logistical and scheduling adjustments.

Deadlock Over Bangladesh’s Participation in T20 World Cup Amid India Security Concerns

Under the current schedule, Bangladesh are set to play their opening group match against West Indies in Kolkata. Their next two group matches are also slated for Kolkata, before concluding the group stage in Mumbai.

Roots of the Dispute

The controversy reportedly began after Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman was removed from Kolkata Knight Riders’ IPL 2026 squad on instructions from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), without an official explanation. This was followed by the Bangladesh government banning the broadcast of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the country.

Subsequently, the BCB informed the ICC of its refusal to play World Cup matches in India, a stance it has so far maintained.

Regional Implications and Pakistan’s Position

Reports also suggest that Pakistan may reassess its own participation in the India-Sri Lanka–hosted tournament amid growing concerns over Bangladesh’s situation. Sources indicate that Bangladesh has sought Pakistan’s support, with Islamabad backing Dhaka’s position and stressing that legitimate security concerns should be addressed without pressure.

As the January 21 deadline approaches, Bangladesh’s decision could have wider implications for regional cricket and the tournament’s final lineup.
