Lahore: On the occasion of World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif delivered a strong and emotional message, calling human trafficking the modern form of slavery and declaring that its eradication is one of her government’s top priorities.
She stressed that the purpose of this day is to raise public awareness so people can recognize the harsh realities of human exploitation and understand the dangers of using illegal routes to go abroad.
Maryam Nawaz highlighted a recent tragedy involving a boat accident during an illegal attempt to reach Europe, which claimed the lives of many innocent people. She called it a major human disaster and reiterated her government’s commitment to taking serious action to prevent such incidents.
Condemning human traffickers, she said these individuals, driven by greed, endanger the lives of innocent citizens — especially children. She firmly stated, “Children are my red line,” emphasizing that their safety and protection is non-negotiable.
She assured that the Punjab government is implementing a zero-tolerance policy against child exploitation and will not tolerate human trafficking under any circumstances.
The Chief Minister also warned parents not to fall for false promises of overseas employment or a better future through illegal means, stressing that such actions are not only risky but often fatal.
Maryam Nawaz urged the public to choose only legal, safe, and authorized channels for international travel, ensuring their own safety and that of their loved ones. She affirmed that the Punjab government is using every available resource to combat human trafficking and to provide a safer, more dignified life for every child, youth, and citizen in the province.
It is worth noting that in recent years, illegal human trafficking — particularly involving children and young adults — has become a critical issue in Pakistan. Tragic incidents during unauthorized sea journeys to Europe have resulted in the loss of countless lives. The Punjab government’s clear and strong stance on this issue signals a shift toward more aggressive anti-trafficking policies in the region.
