Imran Khan Taken to Hospital for Eye Examination
Islamabad – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan was recently taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad for a routine eye examination, federal Information Minister Atta Tarar confirmed on Thursday.
Speaking to state television, Tarar clarified that Khan’s visit was purely for medical purposes and that he remains in good health.
Routine Check-Up Conducted Following Specialist Advice
According to Tarar, last week, eye specialists conducted an initial examination of Khan at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. On the recommendation of the medical experts, Khan was temporarily transferred to PIMS for further evaluation.
The procedure at PIMS lasted approximately 20 minutes, Tarar said, adding that it was a standard examination with no complications. After the check-up, Khan was returned to Adiala Jail with necessary instructions from the doctors.
Former Prime Minister Remains in Stable Condition
Atta Tarar emphasized that Khan remained completely stable throughout the process. He further reassured the public that the former prime minister is fully healthy.
The minister highlighted that all inmates, including high-profile political figures, have access to medical care as per jail regulations. This is in accordance with standard procedures, he said.
Social Media Speculation and Government Response
In recent days, reports circulating on social media suggested that Imran Khan had been hospitalized, prompting widespread speculation about his health. Until Tarar’s confirmation, the government had not released any official statement on the matter.
Experts say that such temporary transfers of prisoners for medical care are common in Pakistan. PIMS, Pakistan’s largest government hospital, frequently provides specialized care to inmates referred by prison authorities.
Context: Health of Political Leaders in Custody
Imran Khan, who served as Pakistan’s prime minister from 2018 to 2022, was arrested in connection with ongoing legal cases. His health has been a matter of public concern, with PTI supporters and critics alike closely monitoring updates.
Prison authorities in Pakistan are required under law to provide adequate medical facilities to all inmates. Cases involving political leaders often draw heightened attention both nationally and internationally, given their potential political implications.
Takeaway
The official confirmation by Atta Tarar aims to quell rumors surrounding Khan’s health. With the routine eye examination completed without incident, the former prime minister continues to serve his sentence under standard prison care, maintaining good health.
