WFI Cracks Down on Age Fraud
The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has suspended 11 wrestlers for submitting fake birth certificates in a major age-fraud investigation.
According to Indian media reports, a verification drive revealed that several athletes had tampered with official documents to alter their ages. The aim, officials say, was to qualify for younger competition categories and gain a competitive edge.
The fraudulent activity came to light after the Municipal Corporation of Delhi scrutinized the birth records of 95 wrestlers. Investigators found discrepancies in 11 cases, prompting immediate disciplinary measures.
How the Fraud Was Carried Out
Officials disclosed that some documents had been digitally altered, in many cases using software such as Photoshop. In other instances, the birth certificates were suspiciously issued between 12 and 15 years after the athletes’ actual dates of birth — a significant red flag in record verification.
Such practices are not uncommon in competitive youth sports, where age categories can be decisive for an athlete’s career trajectory. A younger age on paper can allow an older, more experienced athlete to dominate in junior tournaments.
Immediate and Previous Suspensions
In the latest round of disciplinary action, WFI suspended six wrestlers following the confirmation of fraudulent documents. The remaining five had already been suspended in earlier investigations.
A WFI spokesperson stressed that the organization is committed to protecting the integrity of the sport. “We will take the strictest action against anyone who tries to undermine transparency. Age fraud not only breaks the rules but also damages the careers of genuine athletes,” the spokesperson said.
Broader Issue of Age Fraud in Indian Sports
Age manipulation has long been a challenge for Indian sports bodies, particularly in disciplines with youth competitions such as wrestling, cricket, and athletics. In wrestling, weight categories already play a key role in determining competition brackets, but age groups further shape career development.
Sports administrators say that falsifying age records can unfairly deprive younger athletes of opportunities, demoralize honest competitors, and harm India’s international reputation in sports.
In previous years, the Athletics Federation of India and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have also conducted large-scale drives to detect age fraud, using bone tests, digital verification, and municipal record checks.
WFI’s New Verification Measures
Following the scandal, the WFI has announced plans to tighten its document verification process. Officials are working with municipal corporations and government agencies to cross-check submitted records before allowing athletes to participate in official competitions.
