Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has firmly stated that India cannot unilaterally suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, calling it a violation of international law and long-standing agreements between the two countries. He emphasized that Pakistan’s water rights are protected under this treaty, and the recent ruling by the Court of Arbitration has further strengthened Pakistan’s legal and diplomatic position.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, this ruling reinforces Pakistan’s stance on the Indus Waters Treaty, asserting that India does not have the authority to revoke or suspend it unilaterally, a key point in the ongoing India-Pakistan water dispute.
“This is a significant diplomatic and legal success for Pakistan,” the Prime Minister said, while underlining the critical role of water in the country’s economy and agriculture. “Water is our lifeline,” he added, highlighting the government’s ongoing efforts toward conservation and better resource management.
On this occasion, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised Law Minister Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar and Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan for their commendable efforts on the international legal front.
He reaffirmed that Pakistan will continue to protect its water rights in the spirit of the Indus Waters Treaty and will not accept any unilateral action by India.
Concluding his remarks, PM Shehbaz appealed to the Chief Justice to keep a vigilant eye on the judiciary’s integrity, stating, “Days may pass, but legacies are left behind.”
