FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that Iran will play its World Cup matches in the United States as originally scheduled, despite ongoing regional tensions and conflict involving the US and its allies.

Speaking during a visit to Türkiye, Infantino dismissed suggestions of relocating Iran’s matches, stating clearly that “the matches will be where they should be according to the draw.” His remarks effectively ruled out any immediate changes to the tournament schedule or venues.

Iran’s Request for Venue Change

The Iranian Football Federation (FFIRI) had previously requested that its group-stage matches be moved from the US to Mexico. The request was based on concerns over security and political tensions, particularly due to US involvement alongside Israel in recent military actions that escalated the regional conflict.

Iran’s sports ministry has also imposed restrictions, banning national and club teams from traveling to countries it considers hostile until further notice. This added further uncertainty over Iran’s participation under the existing arrangements.

Tournament Schedule and Group Details

Iran secured qualification for the World Cup in March last year and is placed in Group G, where it is scheduled to face Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand. All three of Iran’s group matches are set to take place in the United States — two in Los Angeles and one in Seattle.

The tournament itself will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, running from June 11 to July 19.

Security Concerns and Political Reactions

US President Donald Trump recently commented that while Iran’s team would be allowed to play in the US, concerns about their “life and safety” might make participation sensitive. He later clarified that any potential threats would not originate from within the United States.

Meanwhile, internal issues have also emerged within the Iranian squad. Striker Sardar Azmoun was left out of a recent training camp amid reports of disciplinary action, following a social media post that drew criticism during the ongoing conflict.

FIFA’s Support for Iran

Despite the tensions, Infantino reiterated FIFA’s commitment to supporting the Iranian team. He assured players and officials that the organization would assist with logistical arrangements, including training camps and international travel if needed.

“Whatever support is required, we will provide it,” Infantino said, emphasizing FIFA’s intention to keep football separate from political disputes where possible.

While geopolitical tensions continue to cast uncertainty over the tournament, FIFA’s stance signals a commitment to maintaining the original structure of the World Cup. For now, Iran is expected to compete in the United States as planned, with global attention focused not only on football but also on the broader political backdrop surrounding the event.
