Italy has become the first European country to officially allocate a dedicated job quota for Pakistani workers. This step marks a major development in labour cooperation between Pakistan and Italy. Moreover, it signals growing European confidence in Pakistan’s workforce at a time of widespread labour shortages.

The initiative is expected to provide thousands of Pakistanis with legal, dignified employment opportunities in Europe. At the same time, Italy aims to address gaps in key sectors of its labour market.

Italy Allocates a Three-Year Employment Quota

According to Pakistan’s Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis, Italy has allocated a total of 10,500 jobs for Pakistani workers over the next three years. Authorities designed this quota to ensure continuity rather than short-term hiring.

Each year, 3,500 Pakistani workers will travel to Italy for employment. This annual allocation will remain in effect for three consecutive years. As a result, workers and recruiters will benefit from greater predictability and planning.

Officials believe this structured framework will also help curb irregular migration by offering legal pathways to Europe.

Clear Breakdown of Seasonal and Non-Seasonal Jobs

The quota divides employment into two distinct categories. First, 1,500 workers per year will enter Italy under the seasonal work quota. These jobs usually relate to agriculture and other time-bound industries.

Meanwhile, 2,000 workers each year will secure non-seasonal jobs. These positions typically offer longer contracts and better job stability. Consequently, workers will gain opportunities to build long-term careers and professional skills.

This balance benefits Italian employers while providing Pakistani workers with diverse employment options.

Key Sectors Offering Jobs

Several important sectors fall under this employment quota. According to official information, shipbreaking, healthcare, and agriculture lead the list.

In addition, Italy will recruit skilled and semi-skilled Pakistani workers. These roles include welders, technicians, chefs, waiters, and housekeeping staff. Furthermore, jobs in nursing, medical technology, farming, and crop cultivation will also be available.

These sectors play a vital role in Italy’s economy. Therefore, Pakistani workers are expected to fill labour shortages while contributing their expertise.

Pakistan–Italy Joint Working Group

To manage this cooperation, Pakistan and Italy have established a joint working group. According to ministry officials, the group will hold its second meeting in February in Islamabad.

During this meeting, both sides will review progress and discuss future steps. In particular, they will focus on worker protection, skill alignment, and smoother visa procedures.

Through continued dialogue, both countries aim to strengthen and expand their labour partnership.

Federal Minister Welcomes the Decision

Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Chaudhry Salik Hussain has described the agreement as a milestone for Pakistan. He said the decision opens new employment doors for Pakistani workers in Italy.

Furthermore, he noted that this move reflects international trust in Pakistan’s labour force. He also expressed optimism that other European countries would soon follow Italy’s example.

According to the minister, this initiative represents an important step toward broader access to European labour markets.

Role of Overseas Pakistanis in the Economy

Chaudhry Salik Hussain emphasized the central role overseas Pakistanis play in the national economy. He described them as a backbone of economic stability.

Every year, millions of Pakistanis working abroad send billions of dollars in remittances. These funds support families, strengthen foreign exchange reserves, and contribute to economic growth.

Beyond financial contributions, overseas Pakistanis also represent the country abroad. Through their skills and conduct, they act as informal ambassadors for Pakistan.

A Step Toward Safer Labour Migration

Experts believe Italy’s decision could set a precedent across Europe. Legal labour migration reduces worker exploitation and improves safety. At the same time, host countries gain access to reliable and trained workers.

For many Pakistanis, this announcement brings renewed hope. It offers a lawful route to Europe, improved working conditions, and long-term prospects.

Ultimately, the success of this initiative will depend on transparent recruitment and effective training. If managed well, it could reshape Pakistan’s labour ties with Europe and create lasting benefits for both sides.
