Lahore, Pakistan – As the city prepares for the annual Basant festival, authorities have announced a ban on kite flying in areas surrounding the Allama Iqbal International Airport. The move comes amid safety concerns over potential risks to aircraft during takeoff and landing.

The Punjab government has declared that Basant will be celebrated in Lahore from February 6 to 8, a festival traditionally marked by kite flying. Despite the restrictions, local markets have reported brisk sales of colorful kites and related supplies, reflecting continued public enthusiasm.

Areas Affected by the Ban

According to an official notification issued by city authorities, kite flying will be strictly prohibited in several neighborhoods located near the airport. The ban specifically targets zones that lie within aircraft approach and departure paths.

The restricted areas include:

  • Nadra Abad

  • Gulshan Ali Colony

  • Nishat Colony

  • Bhatta Chowk

In addition, kite flying is banned in parts of the Defence Housing Authority (DHA), specifically blocks R, S, P, and Q. The notification also covers Al-Faisal Town, Johray Pul, Tajpura, and the Canal Road adjacent to Tajpura.

Officials stated that the restrictions are aimed at preventing accidents and ensuring public safety during Basant. Kite strings, especially those coated with glass (locally known as manja), have been linked to injuries and fatalities in past celebrations.

Aviation and Public Safety Concerns

Airports around the world enforce strict no-fly zones for recreational activities near runways. Lahore’s ban mirrors international standards, as kite strings can entangle aircraft, damage engines, or cause crashes during takeoff and landing.

The safety of passengers and crew is our top priority, said a spokesperson for the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). We urge citizens to enjoy Basant responsibly, away from high-risk zones.

Previous years have seen incidents where kite strings caused serious accidents, including injuries to motorcyclists and pedestrians. In urban areas, overhead electric wires are also at risk, which can result in power outages and additional hazards.

Cultural Significance of Basant

Basant marks the arrival of spring in Punjab and has been celebrated for centuries. Traditionally, the festival is associated with kite flying, colorful decorations, and musical festivities. In Lahore, Basant is a deeply ingrained cultural event, attracting participants of all ages.

Despite safety concerns, the festival remains immensely popular. Shops across Lahore have reported high demand for kites, spools, and decorative materials, signaling that public enthusiasm has not waned.

Enforcement and Public Cooperation

Authorities have urged residents to comply with the restrictions to avoid fines or legal action. Police and local officials will monitor the affected areas, particularly near sensitive aviation corridors, to ensure adherence.

Citizens have been encouraged to celebrate Basant in designated safe zones, away from airports and major roadways. In recent years, some localities have organized controlled kite-flying competitions in parks and open fields, providing a safe alternative to traditional street-based festivities.

Looking Ahead

While the Basant festival continues to evoke excitement across Lahore, the emphasis on safety this year reflects growing awareness of the risks associated with kite flying near urban infrastructure. Authorities hope that these measures will allow citizens to enjoy the festival while minimizing accidents and disruptions.

The Punjab government’s proactive approach underscores a balance between preserving cultural traditions and ensuring modern urban safety. Residents are expected to observe the festival responsibly between February 6 and 8, while enjoying the vibrant colors and energy that have long defined Lahore’s Basant celebrations.
