New Flood Wave from India: Next 24 to 48 Hours Critical, PDMA Director

Lahore, Director General of Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Irfan Ali Kathia, has warned that the next 24 to 48 hours will be crucial as a new flood wave originating from India threatens parts of Punjab.

In a media briefing, Irfan Ali Kathia said that water released from India is increasing the flow in the Sutlej River, causing water levels at various headworks across Punjab to rise rapidly. He specifically highlighted the threat at Head Muhammadwala, where flooding is expected by this evening.

If Head Muhammadwala breaches, approximately 16 villages (mauzas) could be submerged, potentially affecting 7,000 to 10,000 homes,” the DG said. Due to this risk, Head Muhammadwala has been closed to all traffic as a precautionary measure.

The DG further explained that the water from the Sutlej will accumulate at the Panjnad confluence, where it meets other rivers, and has already entered districts like Bahawalnagar and Bahawalpur. The inflow of water from India continues unabated, increasing the flood risk downstream.

Tarbela Dam spillways were also opened partially yesterday to manage the rising water levels. According to the PDMA, the flow at the Balochi Headworks has reached 130,000 cusecs, and a major flood surge is moving towards southern Punjab via the Chenab River.

Irfan Ali Kathia stressed that the government, military, and all relevant agencies are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to ensure the safety and protection of affected communities. So far, 395 relief camps have been established across Punjab to provide shelter and aid to flood victims.

He urged people to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities during this critical period as rescue and relief efforts continue amid ongoing rains that complicate operations.
