Pakistan has set an ambitious goal of increasing its exports to $60 billion by 2029, according to Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal. The announcement reflects the government’s broader strategy to boost economic growth, expand industrial capacity, and improve Pakistan’s position in global markets.

Speaking during a visit to the Pakistan Pavilion at Gulfood 2026 in Dubai, Ahsan Iqbal said export-led growth remains a central pillar of national economic planning. He stressed that improving product quality and global competitiveness is essential for achieving these targets.

Export Growth at the Heart of Economic Planning

Ahsan Iqbal stated that the government has set clear export benchmarks for the coming years. According to him, the immediate target is to reach $60 billion in exports by 2029, while the longer-term vision extends even further.

He added that Pakistan aims to push its exports to $100 billion over the next decade. This, he said, will require consistent policy support, investment in innovation, and closer engagement with international markets.

Currently, Pakistan’s annual exports hover around $30 billion, with textiles, agriculture, and food products forming the backbone of export earnings. In this context, the new targets represent a significant scaling up of ambition and capacity.

Focus on Building a Global Made in Pakistan Brand

During his visit, the minister emphasised that transforming Made in Pakistan into a globally recognised and trusted brand is a top government priority. He said Pakistani products must meet international quality standards to compete effectively.

Moreover, he highlighted the importance of value addition rather than relying solely on raw or semi-finished goods. According to him, higher-quality finished products help exporters access premium markets and secure better prices.

Ahsan Iqbal also underlined the role of branding, packaging, and certification. These factors, he said, increasingly influence buyer decisions in international trade.

Strong Presence at Gulfood 2026

Gulfood, held annually in Dubai, is one of the world’s largest food and beverage trade exhibitions. It attracts buyers, distributors, and investors from across the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and Africa.

This year, more than 140 Pakistani companies are participating in the exhibition. These firms represent a wide range of sectors, including rice, spices, processed foods, beverages, and agricultural products.

During his tour, Ahsan Iqbal visited multiple Pakistani stalls and met exhibitors. He appreciated their efforts and encouraged them to focus on consistent quality and long-term partnerships.

Expanding Access to Global Markets

The minister stressed that participation in international exhibitions plays a key role in opening new markets. Events like Gulfood allow Pakistani exporters to connect directly with global buyers and understand market trends.

He noted that improving logistics, easing regulatory barriers, and supporting exporters with trade facilitation are also critical. According to him, export growth cannot rely on the private sector alone and requires active government support.

Furthermore, he pointed out that regional markets, especially in the Middle East and Africa, offer strong potential for Pakistani food and agricultural products.

Challenges and the Road Ahead

Despite the ambitious targets, Pakistan faces several challenges. These include energy costs, currency volatility, and global economic uncertainty. However, government officials believe that policy continuity and export diversification can help overcome these hurdles.

Ahsan Iqbal reiterated that sustained reforms and public-private cooperation are essential. He expressed confidence that, with the right strategy, Pakistan can significantly increase its export footprint over the coming years.

As Pakistan positions itself for higher growth, the government hopes that events like Gulfood 2026 will serve as stepping stones toward a more competitive and export-driven economy.
