Pakistan’s Prime Minister Hails ‘Historic Victory’ Over India in Independence Day Address

Shehbaz Sharif links recent military success to renewed national pride on 79th Independence Day

PM’s Independence Day Message

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the nation on its 79th Independence Day, linking this year’s celebrations to what he described as a “historic victory” against India. He said the outcome of the recent conflict had deepened the significance of the day and infused the public with renewed energy and resolve.

In his televised address from Islamabad, Sharif expressed gratitude to God for Pakistan’s 78-year journey since its creation in 1947, recalling the national spirit seen during the 78th Independence Day celebrations last year. He paid tribute to the country’s founding leaders — including Muhammad Ali Jinnah and poet-philosopher Allama Iqbal — as well as the activists and workers of the independence movement who turned the dream of a separate homeland into reality.

Remembering the Struggle for Independence

Sharif emphasised that Pakistan’s independence was achieved through immense sacrifice, vision, and unity. He said that the lessons from that struggle remain relevant, reminding citizens of the need to protect and strengthen the country’s sovereignty.

He noted that the founding fathers envisioned a state built on the principles of justice, equality, and self-determination. According to him, the nation’s ability to endure challenges over the decades is a testament to the strength of those ideals.

Acknowledging National Progress Despite Challenges

The prime minister acknowledged that Pakistan’s journey has not been without hardship, citing decades of economic difficulties, regional tensions, and natural disasters. However, he highlighted that the country had achieved significant progress in multiple sectors — from defence and sports to information technology and trade.

He praised advancements in digital innovation and military preparedness, adding that Pakistan’s resilience in the face of adversity was a key reason for its continued survival and development.

Reference to the May 2025 Conflict

Sharif’s speech included a pointed reference to the military confrontation with India between 6 and 10 May 2025. Describing it as a war “imposed” on Pakistan, he claimed that the nation’s armed forces displayed exceptional skill and faith, forcing the adversary into retreat within hours.

While official casualty figures and independent verification of the events have not been provided in his remarks, the prime minister framed the episode as a decisive victory that boosted national morale.

Honouring the Sacrifice of Soldiers

In a solemn part of his address, Sharif paid homage to Pakistan’s martyrs. He said their sacrifices had allowed citizens to live under the “shade of freedom” and pledged prayers for their eternal peace.

The prime minister underlined that safeguarding independence required unity between the military and civilians. He urged citizens to remember that every generation carries the responsibility of defending the homeland and contributing to its progress.

Independence Day in the Context of Regional Politics

Pakistan’s Independence Day is celebrated annually on 14 August with flag-raising ceremonies, cultural events, and public gatherings across the country. This year’s observance, coming shortly after a period of military tension, has taken on a more defiant tone.

Relations between Pakistan and India have long been strained over a range of issues, most notably the disputed Kashmir region. While Sharif’s remarks focused on unity and victory, analysts note that such rhetoric can also influence public sentiment and future diplomatic positions.

Call for National Unity

Closing his address, Sharif appealed for unity in addressing Pakistan’s current challenges, including economic reform, security threats, and climate resilience. He stressed that patriotism should be measured not only by words but also by practical efforts to strengthen the nation.

He said: “Our independence is both a blessing and a responsibility. Let us honour it by building a Pakistan worthy of the sacrifices that created it.”
