Prime Minister Meets Chinese Counterpart, Reaffirms Strong Support for China’s Global Initiatives

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated China on the successful hosting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit and expressed Pakistan’s desire to learn from China’s development model.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Beijing, where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen Pakistan-China relations.

The statement said Pakistan will soon issue Panda Bonds in the Chinese capital market. The meeting emphasized the early implementation of key projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), including ML-1, the realignment of the Karakoram Highway, and the Gwadar Port.

Furthermore, the two Prime Ministers agreed to expedite work on CPEC Phase 2, which includes five new economic corridors.

The Prime Minister’s House statement also highlighted that the B2B Investment Conference was attended by 300 Pakistani and 500 Chinese companies. Agriculture, minerals, textiles, industry, and IT were identified as priority sectors for investment.

He also thanked China for its support towards Pakistan’s sovereignty and development, and reaffirmed strong backing for President Xi Jinping’s global initiatives.

The meeting marked the signing of the Joint Action Plan 2023-2024 as a significant milestone. Both leaders participated in ceremonies for several agreements spanning science and technology, IT, media, and agriculture.

Both leaders agreed to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Pakistan-China diplomatic relations next year with appropriate grandeur.
