Green Tractor Scheme Phase Two Launched
Punjab Chief Minister Meryam Nawaz Sharif officially launched the second phase of the Green Tractor Scheme, aimed at providing subsidized tractors to local farmers. The scheme is part of the provincial government’s efforts to modernize agriculture and boost productivity in the region.
As part of the launch, the government conducted a lottery to allocate 9,500 high-power tractors to successful applicants. The Chief Minister personally inaugurated the draw and celebrated the winners, highlighting the government’s focus on supporting rural farming communities.
Personal Congratulations in Punjabi
In a warm gesture, CM Meryam Nawaz personally called one of the successful farmers, Muhammad Ashiq, congratulating him in Punjabi. She said:
“How are you? You applied for a tractor and your name has been selected. I called to congratulate you.”
The personal phone call was widely appreciated as a demonstration of the government’s effort to connect directly with grassroots farmers and celebrate their success.
Subsidy Details and Eligibility
The Secretary of Agriculture briefed the Chief Minister about the scheme’s benefits. Farmers owning seven acres or more of land are eligible for high-power tractors ranging from 75 to 125 horsepower. The Punjab government will provide a subsidy of PKR 1 million per high-power tractor.
In total, 20,000 tractors will receive subsidies under phase two. This includes 9,500 high-power tractors and 10,000 medium-power tractors, which have engines of 50 to 65 horsepower. Medium-power tractor recipients will receive a PKR 500,000 subsidy per unit.
Application Statistics
A total of 734,000 farmers applied for the scheme in this phase. Out of these, 282,000 were deemed eligible for the lottery, and 9,500 farmers were ultimately selected to receive high-power tractors.
Interestingly, 98 percent of applicants preferred locally manufactured tractors, while only 2 percent showed interest in imported models. This indicates strong support for domestic agricultural machinery.
Support for Imported Tractor Companies
Despite limited demand, the Punjab government has allowed foreign tractor companies to establish business offices and dealerships in the province. This move aims to diversify tractor options and encourage competition, potentially benefiting farmers with more choices in the future.
Implications for Agriculture
The Green Tractor Scheme reflects the Punjab government’s ongoing focus on enhancing agricultural productivity. Modern tractors can significantly reduce manual labor, increase efficiency, and boost crop yields. Experts suggest that such initiatives may play a vital role in strengthening rural economies and supporting Pakistan’s agricultural sector.
Conclusion
The launch of Phase Two of the Green Tractor Scheme has been celebrated as a major step toward empowering local farmers. Personal gestures, such as the Chief Minister’s phone call in Punjabi, have reinforced public confidence in the government’s commitment to grassroots development. With thousands of farmers set to receive tractors and subsidies, the initiative is expected to positively impact farming communities across Punjab.
