Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned that dense fog will affect several parts of Punjab over the next few days. The authority issued a three-day alert, urging residents and travelers to take extra care as winter weather worsens and visibility drops sharply.
Cold nights, light winds, and rising moisture levels often create heavy fog during winter across the plains of Pakistan. As a result, daily travel, road safety, and routine activities frequently face disruption during this season.
NDMA Warns of Dangerous Fog Conditions
The NDMA said dense fog will persist in many districts of central and southern Punjab for at least 72 hours. The authority expects the fog to appear mainly at night and during early morning hours, when temperatures fall and moisture condenses near the ground.
Officials urged citizens to remain alert and avoid unnecessary risks. According to the NDMA, fog-related hazards increase sharply during winter, especially on highways, motorways, and rural roads.
Major Cities Likely to See Reduced Visibility
Several major cities may face severe visibility issues. The NDMA named Lahore, Jhang, Multan, Khanewal, Mian Channu, and Sahiwal as areas where fog density could remain high.
In these cities, visibility may drop to very low levels, making driving difficult and dangerous. As a result, traffic flow could slow down significantly, especially during peak commuting hours. Public transport and freight movement may also face delays.
The advisory also covers Okara, Pakpattan, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Lodhran, and Vehari. Drivers in these districts should prepare for sudden fog patches, particularly on open roads and near agricultural land.
Rising Risk of Road Accidents
Dense fog poses a serious threat to road safety. Poor visibility prevents drivers from judging distances accurately, which increases the risk of collisions. For this reason, the NDMA advised motorists to reduce speed and maintain safe following distances.
Every winter, fog-related accidents cause injuries and fatalities across Punjab. In previous years, authorities temporarily closed major highways and motorways to prevent large-scale accidents. While officials have not announced closures yet, traffic police remain on high alert.
Pedestrians also face increased danger during foggy conditions. People walking near roads during early morning hours often remain unseen by drivers until it is too late.
Fog Expected in Sindh and Islamabad
The NDMA said fog will not remain limited to Punjab. Upper Sindh, especially Sukkur and nearby areas, may also experience foggy weather during the same period.
Islamabad may see fog during late-night and early-morning hours as well. Although the fog there may not reach the same intensity as in Punjab, commuters should still exercise caution while traveling.
Winter fog commonly affects northern and central Pakistan due to cold air settling over flat terrain. Calm weather conditions allow fog to linger for several hours.
Public Safety Guidelines Issued
Authorities urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly before sunrise. Drivers should switch on fog lights, slow down, and follow traffic rules at all times.
Travelers should monitor official weather updates and plan journeys during daylight whenever possible. Using seat belts and avoiding sudden lane changes can also reduce accident risks.
The NDMA emphasized that public awareness plays a key role in preventing accidents. Careful driving and responsible behavior can save lives during hazardous weather.
