Dubai-Style Points System Now in Effect
The Punjab government has introduced a modern Dubai-style driving license points system to control traffic violations and improve road safety. The system assigns points for each traffic offense, coupled with monetary fines. Minor violations will result in 2 points, while more serious offenses could cost up to 4 points.
Authorities have warned that drivers accumulating 20 points in a single year could face license suspension ranging from two months to one year, depending on the severity and number of offenses.
Higher Penalties for Serious Offenses
Violations such as speeding, running red lights, or dangerous driving will attract higher points deductions and heavier fines. Recently, the Punjab government has also proposed a significant increase in traffic fines of up to PKR 20,000 to further discourage repeat offenders. Traffic police officials said the system is designed to encourage responsible driving, reduce accidents, and ensure practical accountability beyond just financial penalties.
This initiative will make drivers more cautious and aware of the consequences of breaking traffic rules, a senior traffic official commented.
Updated Licensing Fees and Procedures
The government has also updated the driving license fee structure:
-
Total annual fee: PKR 1,830 (Test: PKR 150, License issuance after passing: PKR 1,350, Courier fee: PKR 480)
-
Learner licenses can now be obtained online for PKR 500, followed by theoretical and practical tests before the full license is issued.
-
Licenses can be issued for 1 to 5 years, with fees varying based on the license duration.
This reform aligns Punjab with global traffic management practices, reflecting a shift towards stricter enforcement and road safety awareness. Experts believe the points system could help reduce traffic accidents, which have remained a persistent concern in Pakistani cities.
