Severe Rain Alert Issued for Islamabad and Punjab

NDMA Warns of Flash Floods in Low-Lying Areas – Citizens Urged to Evacuate Promptly

Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a severe weather alert, forecasting heavy rains over the next 24 to 48 hours in various parts of the country, including Islamabad and Punjab. Citizens have been strongly advised to stay alert and evacuate vulnerable areas if necessary.

According to an NDMA spokesperson, intermittent torrential rains are expected in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, raising fears of flooding in low-lying areas and overflow in Nala Lai. Residents near the stream have been urged to move to safer locations immediately upon hearing emergency sirens and to cooperate fully with rescue authorities.

The spokesperson assured that NDMA and all relevant departments are closely monitoring the situation, and timely measures are being taken to manage any emergencies.

In Islamabad and Rawalpindi, the heavy rainfall has already caused urban flooding, overflowing streams, and waterlogged roads. In some areas, vehicles have been swept away, and the district administration has instructed residents near water bodies to evacuate as a precautionary measure.

Meanwhile, flood emergencies have been declared in various parts of Punjab, especially Chakwal, and the Prime Minister has called an emergency meeting to address the worsening situation.

The NDMA further stated that this weather system is not confined to the federal capital alone but may affect several districts across Punjab, including:
Lahore, Chakwal, Attock, Jhelum, Khushab, Sargodha, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Narowal, Okara, Kasur, Sheikhupura, and Hafizabad. Flash floods and rising water levels in local streams pose significant risks in these areas.

Citizens have been strongly urged to:

  • Stay updated with weather reports

  • Avoid unnecessary travel

  • Follow safety guidelines strictly

It is important to note that prior to the onset of this year’s monsoon season, the Meteorological Department and NDMA had already warned about the potential for severe flooding nationwide, placing all emergency services on high alert.
