Six Suspects Held Over Brutal Assault in Rawalpindi
Police in Rawalpindi have arrested six suspects, including a serving police officer, in connection with the brutal assault of a citizen who was allegedly stripped naked, chained, and tortured in the city’s Gawalmandi area.
According to officials, the disturbing incident came to light after a video surfaced showing the victim in chains. The footage quickly spread across social media, prompting public outrage and forcing authorities to take immediate action.
The suspects have been identified as Yasir Khan, Malik Junaid Zahir, Faisal Masih, Samar Abbas, Roheel, and Rab Nawaz alias Nanha. Police sources revealed that Yasir Khan is currently posted with the National Police Foundation, an agency responsible for welfare and housing projects for law enforcement personnel.
Case Registered Under Anti-Terrorism Act
Investigations are being led by City Circle Investigation Inspector Amir Khalid under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA). Officials stated that the case also includes charges related to unlawful detention and recording of explicit videos.
The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) has granted a seven-day physical remand of the accused for further interrogation. During the hearing, the prosecution informed the court that the suspects had chained and assaulted the victim while filming the act.
The court has directed investigators to present the suspects again on 31 October, after completing the inquiry. Authorities have indicated that additional arrests could follow if evidence links other individuals to the crime.
Public Outcry and Questions Over Police Oversight
The incident has reignited debate about police conduct and accountability in Pakistan. Rights activists and legal experts have called for an independent inquiry, stressing that such acts — particularly when involving law enforcement officers — damage public trust in the justice system.
Local residents of Gawalmandi described the event as deeply disturbing and expressed fear over the growing culture of impunity. If police officers are themselves involved, where should citizens turn for protection? one resident told local reporters.
Authorities Launch Further Operations
In response to the case, the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) has intensified search operations across the area to ensure no further threats remain. Officials said these actions are part of a wider effort to curb violence and prevent abuse of authority by individuals or groups linked to law enforcement.
The Rawalpindi administration has also vowed strict disciplinary measures against any police personnel found complicit in the assault. Senior officials emphasized that no one is above the law, reiterating that both the victim’s safety and the integrity of the justice process will be ensured.
As the investigation continues, the case has become a litmus test for Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to reform its police institutions and restore public faith in the rule of law.
