Former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing to a close a distinguished career spanning nearly two decades, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed in an official statement.

Career Highlights

Born in Karachi, Sarfaraz made his ODI debut in 2007, followed by his Test and T20I debuts in 2010. Over his international career, he represented Pakistan in 54 Tests, 117 ODIs, and 61 T20Is, scoring a total of 6,164 runs across formats, including six centuries and 35 half-centuries.

As a wicketkeeper-batter, Sarfaraz also excelled behind the stumps, taking 315 catches and completing 56 stumpings.

Leadership Achievements

Sarfaraz captained Pakistan in 100 international matches, comprising 50 ODIs, 37 T20Is, and 13 Tests. Under his leadership, Pakistan achieved:

  • No.1 ranking in T20I cricket
  • A world-record streak of 11 consecutive T20I series victories
  • Six clean sweeps in T20I series against West Indies (2016 & 2018), Sri Lanka (2017), Australia (2018), New Zealand (2018), and Scotland (2018)

His captaincy also paved the way for future stars like Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Hasan Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Fakhar Zaman, and Shadab Khan, whom he backed early in their careers.

Historic ICC Triumphs

Sarfaraz led Pakistan to victory in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, defeating India by 180 runs in the final at The Oval, England. This made him the first Pakistan captain to win the Champions Trophy and the only captain to win ICC titles at both junior and senior levels, having previously won the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in 2006 in Sri Lanka.

In recognition of his achievements, he received the Pride of Performance award in 2018, becoming the youngest Pakistan captain to earn the honour.

Individual Records

Some of Sarfaraz’s notable records include:

  • 10 catches in a Test match against South Africa in Johannesburg (2019) – a Pakistan record
  • Only Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter to score an ODI century at Lord’s, achieved against England in 2016

Sarfaraz played his final international match in 2023, a Test against Australia in Perth.

Farewell Statement

Reflecting on his career, Sarfaraz said:

“It has been the greatest honour of my life to represent Pakistan. From leading the U19 team to a world title in 2006 to lifting the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017, every moment in Pakistan colours has been special. I am grateful to my teammates, coaches, family, and fans for their unwavering support throughout my career.”

He added:

“Captaining Pakistan across all formats was a dream come true. Seeing players like Babar, Fakhar, Hasan, Shaheen, Shadab and others grow into match-winners during my captaincy is one of my proudest achievements. Pakistan cricket has always been very close to my heart, and I will continue to support the game in every possible way.”

Sarfaraz also expressed gratitude to the PCB for the trust placed in him over the years, reaffirming his commitment to supporting Pakistan cricket even after retirement.
