Sultan Rahi’s 87th Birth Anniversary: A Tribute to the Undisputed King of Pakistani Cinema

Remembering the legendary Sultan Rahi, whose powerful performances and iconic dialogues forever reshaped Pakistani Punjabi cinema.

Lahore – Today marks the 87th birth anniversary of Sultan Rahi, the undisputed king of Pakistani cinema. Born on June 24, 1938, Sultan Rahi revolutionized the film industry with his powerful voice, commanding presence, and unforgettable dialogue delivery that left an indelible mark on audiences.

Sultan Rahi began his film journey in minor roles as an extra, but his true breakthrough came when filmmaker Hassan Askari adapted Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi’s short story “Gandasa” into the film “Wehshi Jatt.” This film not only introduced a new cinematic dimension to Punjabi cinema but also launched Sultan Rahi into superstardom.

Following “Wehshi Jatt,” his role in “Maula Jatt” became a cinematic milestone. His intense chemistry with co-star Mustafa Qureshi turned the film into a cult classic, making both characters eternal in the hearts of moviegoers. The film’s dialogues, dramatic depth, and Rahi’s commanding screen presence made it one of the most successful Punjabi films of all time.

Over a four-decade-long career, Sultan Rahi appeared in nearly 703 Punjabi and over 100 Urdu films. His on-screen pairings with actresses such as Aasia, Nadira, and Anjuman became iconic, while the soundtracks of his films also gained immense popularity. In recognition of his immense contribution, he was awarded over 160 film awards.

Tragically, on January 9, 1996, Sultan Rahi was brutally murdered near the Gujranwala bypass — a loss that not only claimed the life of a cinematic legend but also dealt a devastating blow to Pakistan’s film industry, from which it never fully recovered.

Globally known as the “Clint Eastwood of Pakistan,” Sultan Rahi’s legacy continues to live on through his films, dialogues, and iconic characters. He remains a beloved figure among all who cherish Pakistani cinema.
