President Trump Warns India of 25% Tariff Without Trade Deal

Trump Criticizes India’s Import Duties, Threatens Tough Action to Protect U.S. Market and Jobs

U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning to India, stating that a 25% tariff may be imposed on Indian imports if a bilateral trade agreement is not reached soon.

Speaking to reporters, Trump acknowledged India as a valuable trade partner but criticized its high import duties, calling them unfair compared to what other countries impose on U.S. goods. He emphasized that, so far, no comprehensive trade agreement has been finalized between the two nations — a stance consistent with Trump’s broader tariff strategy, as seen in his recent move to impose a 35% tariff on Canadian imports.

“If the deadlock continues, we will take steps to protect the U.S. market,” Trump asserted.

Notably, in April, the Trump administration had already announced a 26% tariff on Indian goods, but the implementation was postponed until July.

Trump’s approach also sent a strong signal to American tech companies. He reportedly blocked Tesla’s plan to launch a manufacturing plant in India, and warned Apple that if iPhones are not made in the U.S., the company could face a 25% tariff on imported devices.

He stressed the importance of producing goods—especially tech products—within the United States, citing the need to boost the local economy and create more jobs.

Trump’s message adds fresh pressure on India as well as American firms operating globally, underlining his administration’s priority of economic nationalism and trade fairness.
