When I first joined the team, I didn’t feel understood, he said. I was new, and it was clear that people didn’t know who I was or where I came from.
Khawaja, who is of Pakistani descent, highlighted that cultural misunderstandings often affected perceptions of his commitment. Especially during Ramadan, people thought I wasn’t working hard enough, he explained. In reality, I trained without food until 6:30 a.m., balancing my religious obligations with professional demands.
A Different Experience in 2015
Khawaja’s perspective changed significantly when he made a comeback to the Australian team in 2015. Unlike his first stint, he now found a welcoming environment. The current team members grew up playing alongside me, he said. They’ve become stars in their own right, and this time, returning to the squad felt like coming home.
The veteran player emphasized that the support of teammates and a sense of belonging made him enjoy this chapter of his career more fully than before.
