The government of Punjab, Pakistan is considering announcing early summer vacations for schools and colleges due to the increasing risk of extreme heat and changing weather conditions across the province.
Punjab Minister for School and Higher Education Rana Sikandar Hayat said the provincial government is reviewing a proposal to begin summer holidays from May 22 and continue them until August 2.
Final Decision Expected Soon
Speaking to the media, the education minister said that a final decision regarding summer vacations is expected by May 11.
According to the proposed plan:
- Summer vacations may start on May 22
- Educational institutions could reopen on August 2
Authorities are evaluating weather forecasts and safety concerns before issuing an official notification.
Summer Camps Also Under Consideration
The minister also revealed that the government is discussing the possibility of organizing summer camps during the holiday period.
Although details have not yet been finalized, the camps could include educational and extracurricular activities aimed at helping students remain academically engaged during the long break.
PDMA and Weather Department Warnings
The discussion on early holidays comes after warnings issued by the Punjab Disaster Management Authority> (PDMA) regarding severe weather conditions expected across the province in the coming months.
According to officials:
- Punjab may experience above-normal temperatures until July
- Heatwaves are likely to intensify, especially in plain areas
- Risks of flash floods, urban flooding, windstorms, and dust storms also remain high
The weather department has further warned that rising temperatures may affect crops, orchards, and vegetable production due to strong winds and hailstorms.

Extreme Heat and Student Safety
Educational authorities are increasingly focusing on student safety as temperatures continue to rise across Pakistan during the summer season. High temperatures can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and other health risks, particularly for younger students.
In recent years, several provinces have adjusted academic schedules due to worsening climate conditions and prolonged heatwaves.
Previous Year’s Vacation Schedule
Last year, the Punjab government had announced summer vacations from May 28 to August 14. However, due to exceptionally harsh weather conditions, the holidays for both public and private schools were later extended until August 31.
The possibility of even earlier vacations this year reflects growing concerns over climate-related disruptions and public health risks.
With temperatures expected to remain unusually high over the coming months, the Punjab government is weighing preventive measures to protect students and staff. A final decision on early summer vacations is likely within days as authorities monitor weather conditions and consult relevant departments.
