Buckingham Palace has shared a rare archival video celebrating the royal family’s historic connection with Wimbledon, just days after reports claimed King Charles reunited with Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
The post, shared on July 12 through the Royal Family’s official social media accounts, looked back at a memorable chapter in British royal history as tennis fans prepared for the Wimbledon men’s singles final.
Buckingham Palace celebrates King George VI’s Wimbledon legacy
Accompanying the vintage footage, Buckingham Palace revealed that King George VI, the grandfather of King Charles III, remains the only member of the British royal family to have competed at the Wimbledon Championships.
The palace wrote: “On the final day of another thrilling @Wimbledon Championships, to all those who have participated, did you know…
100 years ago, in 1926, His Majesty’s grandfather King George VI became the first and only member of the Royal Family to compete at Wimbledon, playing in the Gentlemen’s Doubles. It was, alas, a resounding defeat!
…Ah, well, there’s always the strawberries!”
The light-hearted message referenced the famous Wimbledon tradition of serving strawberries and cream during the tournament.

Video shared ahead of Wimbledon final
The nostalgic video was released as excitement builds around the conclusion of this year’s Wimbledon Championships. By revisiting King George VI’s appearance at the prestigious tournament, Buckingham Palace highlighted the long-standing relationship between the monarchy and one of Britain’s most iconic sporting events.
Although members of the royal family frequently attend Wimbledon as spectators and patrons, no other royal has competed in the tournament since King George VI’s appearance a century ago.
Reports of King Charles’ family reunion
The palace’s latest social media post came shortly after reports claimed that King Charles III welcomed Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, Prince Archie, and Princess Lilibet to Highgrove House on Friday.
Buckingham Palace has not commented publicly on the reported family gathering, and no official details have been released regarding the alleged reunion.
Meanwhile, the palace continues to focus on official engagements and public events, with its latest Wimbledon tribute celebrating both Britain’s sporting heritage and a unique moment in royal history.
