ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will lead Pakistan’s delegation to the high-level segment of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York next week, Foreign Office Spokesperson Sajjad Haider Khan confirmed on Thursday.
Addressing the weekly press briefing in Islamabad, the spokesperson said the prime minister would present Pakistan’s perspective on regional and global developments while emphasising dialogue, diplomacy, restraint and the peaceful resolution of disputes.
The 81st UNGA session is being held under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”
The general debate is scheduled to take place from September 22 to 26, with a final sitting on September 28.
Pakistan to highlight key global issues
According to the Foreign Office spokesperson, Prime Minister Shehbaz will be accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar, federal ministers and senior government officials.
“In his UNGA address, the prime minister will outline Pakistan’s priorities on sustainable development, climate change, counterterrorism, Islamophobia, global economic challenges, UN reforms and issues confronting the Global South,” he said.
The premier is also expected to draw international attention to the situation in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir and Palestine.
Pakistan has consistently raised both issues at international forums, calling for greater international attention to developments affecting the populations of the two territories.

During his visit to New York, Prime Minister Shehbaz will participate in several high-level events and hold bilateral meetings with world leaders.
He is also expected to meet the United Nations secretary-general during the visit.
The Foreign Office spokesperson said the prime minister would use the engagements to highlight Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism, the UN Charter, regional peace and international cooperation.
The UNGA gathering will bring together leaders and senior representatives from member states for discussions on major international, economic, security and development challenges.
