Digital Payment System Introduced for Metro & Orange Line in Punjab

CM Maryam Nawaz Approves T-Cash Card, E-Rickshaws, and RFID System in Key Transit Reforms

In a major move to modernize Punjab’s mass transit system, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz chaired a high-level meeting where several important decisions were made. These include the launch of a digital payment system for Metro Bus and Orange Line Train, the introduction of eco-friendly electric rickshaws, and the approval of a unified ‘T-Cash Card’ for commuters.

The meeting reviewed the performance of the Transport Department and the Mass Transit Authority in detail. It was informed that Lahore, Multan, Rawalpindi, and Islamabad will soon phase out the existing token-based fare system. In its place, a barcode and card-based digital payment system will be introduced.

Passengers will be able to pay fares via credit/debit cards, mobile wallets, or NFC (touch-and-go) systems. A unified T-Cash Card will be issued for use across all metro transit systems in the province. Additionally, a separate card will be introduced for students.

The meeting also approved the hiring for technical positions ranging from grade 5 to 18. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also endorsed the plan to replace traditional motorcycle rickshaws with environment-friendly electric rickshaws, instructing the relevant departments to submit proposals immediately.

In another landmark step, Punjab’s first-ever international transport expo was approved. Moreover, a comprehensive RFID sticker system will be launched for vehicle registration, identification, and monitoring across the province.

During the session, Transport Secretary Imran Sikandar Baloch briefed the Chief Minister on the Lahore Yellow Line and Gujranwala BRT projects. It was shared that by August 2025, the delivery of electric buses across various districts of Punjab will begin.

The design and color selection process for 50 modern, prefabricated bus shelters in Lahore was also discussed, and work is expected to begin soon.

CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized that a modern, efficient, and eco-friendly transport system is key to building a progressive and developed Punjab.
