Sydney , Australia has announced that it will expel Iran’s ambassador from Canberra and impose sanctions on the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese accused Tehran of orchestrating two antisemitic attacks in Sydney and Melbourne. Since the outbreak of the Israel-Gaza war in October 2023, Jewish homes, schools, synagogues, and vehicles across Australia have faced vandalism, arson, and other hate-driven attacks.
According to Albanese, Australian security agencies gathered verified intelligence showing that the Iranian government directed at least two attacks. These included the October 20 attack on Sydney’s Louis Continental Kitchen and the December 6 attack on Melbourne’s Adass Israel Synagogue. Investigations also revealed that Iran had been planning further attacks on Australian soil.
The prime minister described the incidents as an extraordinary and dangerous act of aggression by a foreign state, designed to harm Australia’s social cohesion and sow division within its society.
Australia has already suspended operations at its embassy in Tehran, with all diplomats relocated safely to a third country. In addition, the government will formally designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization.
