Javad Ahmed, a famous singer and chairman of Pakistan’s Barabari Party, recently made headlines with a bold promise. He said that if his party wins power, it will raise the minimum monthly wage for workers to 400,000 Pakistani rupees (around $1,300 USD).
Ahmed emphasized that workers form the backbone of Pakistan’s economy. Furthermore, he argued that they play a key role in national development and deserve proper financial support. Laborers, farmers, and their children deserve safety, security, and a better standard of living, he added.
Social Media Erupts with Debate
Immediately after Ahmed’s announcement, social media users reacted strongly. Many criticized the proposal as unrealistic and economically impossible. At the same time, some users responded with humor, mocking the idea of such a large pay increase.
For example, one Twitter user, Maqsood Farooq Awan, wrote: If Javad Ahmed becomes prime minister, I would happily become a worker. Meanwhile, others questioned how Ahmed could deliver such a dramatic change when current and past governments struggled with economic problems.
Ahmed Stands Firm
In response, Ahmed defended his proposal on social media platform X. He explained that he wanted to spark a serious discussion about workers’ welfare. Additionally, he expressed surprise that some people laughed at the idea of higher wages.
When political and business elites earn millions every month, why should a 400,000-rupee minimum wage for workers be controversial? he asked.
Ahmed further emphasized that his goal is to improve living conditions for the working class. Consequently, he hopes to encourage public debate on labor rights and fair financial support.
Context: Pakistan’s Current Wages
Currently, Pakistan’s minimum wage ranges from 25,000 to 30,000 rupees per month, depending on the province. Therefore, Ahmed’s proposal would increase wages more than tenfold. Critics warn that such a rise could trigger inflation and strain businesses.
However, supporters argue that higher wages could reduce poverty, narrow inequality, and boost consumer spending. Pakistan has over 60 million workers, and many are employed in informal sectors where earnings remain below the minimum wage.
