Senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and former federal minister Nabeel Gabol has claimed that global streaming giant Netflix plans to develop a major series on Lyari, one of Karachi’s oldest neighborhoods.

According to Gabol, the series will showcase Lyari’s real history, culture, and social life. Moreover, he emphasized that it aims to challenge the negative portrayal of the area in foreign media.
A Multi-Season Proposal
Gabol explained that a Netflix production team approached him directly with a proposal for a three-season series. In addition, he said the show will explore Lyari’s social, political, and historical background.
Lyari is often portrayed internationally only in terms of crime and unrest, Gabol said. However, he added that this series will highlight its cultural traditions, sports, and political awareness.
Research and Filming Plans
Gabol revealed that the Netflix team plans to visit Pakistan in March to conduct field research. During their visit, they will tour Lyari’s neighborhoods and gather stories from residents.
He added that the team wants to capture authentic experiences. Therefore, they aim to document Lyari’s history and culture accurately. By doing so, they hope to counter decades of stereotyping.
International Talent Consideration
Gabol disclosed that a Netflix director and producer expressed interest in casting Brazilian actor Wagner Moura. Notably, Moura is famous for playing Pablo Escobar in the Netflix series Narcos.
Although the storyline is still under discussion, Gabol said the series will balance Lyari’s historical and cultural aspects with its modern social life. Meanwhile, the team continues planning to engage with local communities.
Lyari’s Cultural and Sporting Identity
Lyari, in southern Karachi, has roughly 1.5 million residents. For instance, the area is known for its rich culture, including music, arts, and sports—especially boxing and football—which produced many local champions.
Politically, Lyari has been a Pakistan Peoples Party stronghold. Residents actively engage in civic and political matters. Consequently, Gabol believes the series can highlight these features and show Lyari beyond crime and conflict.
Lyari has a unique identity shaped by cultural traditions, sports, and political consciousness, he said. Ultimately, this series will help the world see its positive image.
Global Context
International media often focus on Lyari as a hub of gang violence and organized crime, particularly in the 1980s and 1990s. However, residents argue this view ignores the neighborhood’s rich history and vibrant community.
By focusing on social and cultural aspects, Netflix can provide a more balanced perspective. Global audiences will see a side of Lyari rarely shown outside Pakistan.
Conclusion
If Netflix proceeds, the project could become a landmark international portrayal of Lyari. Storytelling and research will combine to present an authentic picture.
Gabol expressed optimism that the series will both entertain and educate viewers. In addition, it can help Lyari reclaim its narrative on the global stage, bridging cultural gaps and challenging stereotypes.
