The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has postponed the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, moving the tournament from January 2027 to December due to what it described as exceptional circumstances in the region.
The decision was announced on Tuesday following growing uncertainty over the tournament’s staging amid recent Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and wider regional tensions.
In a statement, the AFC said its organising committee had approved the revised schedule after considering developments in the region, logistical difficulties and disruptions to international travel.
The new tournament dates are December 23, 2027, to January 21, 2028. The revised schedule will be submitted to FIFA for approval.
Security Concerns Behind Postponement
The AFC said the decision followed extensive discussions and consultations with Saudi officials.
It cited substantial logistical complexities and travel disruptions as key factors behind the postponement.
The governing body said exceptional circumstances had created challenges for organising the competition according to the original schedule, making a delay necessary in the interests of participating teams, officials, spectators and other stakeholders.
The announcement comes after several major sporting events in Saudi Arabia were cancelled or postponed in recent weeks following Houthi attacks on the country.

Saudi Arabia to Host Tournament
The 2027 Asian Cup was originally scheduled to take place from January 7 to February 5, 2027.
Saudi Arabia will continue to host the continental competition, with Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khobar selected as the tournament’s host cities.
The month-long event will bring together national teams from across Asia to compete for the continent’s premier international football title.
Last month, local organisers had maintained that preparations were proceeding according to schedule despite growing concerns about the tournament’s future.
AFC Cites Exceptional Circumstances
In its statement, the AFC said the decision had been taken after close consultation with Saudi authorities and extensive discussions about the challenges facing the event.
The organisation stressed that postponement was necessary to ensure the competition could be delivered in the best interests of all stakeholders.
The revised dates will now require FIFA’s approval before the updated tournament schedule can be formally confirmed.
The postponement represents a major change to the Asian football calendar, with teams, organisers and supporters now facing an extended wait for the 2027 continental championship.
