LIVERPOOL: Arsenal moved to the top of the Premier League table after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Liverpool, with Kai Havertz scoring the decisive goal in the first half.

The win marked Arsenal’s first away victory against Liverpool in 14 years and strengthened their hopes of retaining the league title.

Havertz found the net in the 16th minute, converting a precise low cross from Declan Rice. Although Arsenal controlled the early stages, Liverpool responded strongly and created several opportunities to equalise.

The Gunners, however, held firm under sustained pressure to secure three important points.

Havertz Delivers Early Breakthrough

Arsenal entered the match looking to respond after suffering a shock League Cup elimination against fourth-tier Fleetwood earlier in the week.

Manager Mikel Arteta had criticised his team’s performance in that defeat and received the response he wanted as the defending champions started strongly against Liverpool.

Havertz, who had missed several opportunities in the midweek match, made amends by finishing Rice’s delivery to give Arsenal the lead.

The goal sparked an intense first half, with Liverpool pushing forward in search of an equaliser.

Liverpool Miss Several Chances

Liverpool produced a strong attacking performance under manager Andoni Iraola, putting Arsenal’s defence under considerable pressure.

The home side’s attacking trio of Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola showed promising signs of developing an understanding.

Liverpool also appealed for a penalty after Isak was pulled back by Jurrien Timber while attempting to reach a dangerous delivery from Barcola. However, the referee did not award a spot-kick because Isak remained on his feet.

Iraola questioned the decision, arguing that the shirt-pull was clear and should have resulted in a penalty.

Wirtz came close to scoring with a free-kick that struck the crossbar, while Alexis Mac Allister missed a good heading opportunity.

Despite their attacking pressure, Liverpool went into half-time trailing by a goal.

Arsenal Hold Firm After the Break

Arsenal regained control after the interval as Liverpool’s intensity began to fade.

Goalkeeper Alisson Becker kept his side in the contest with an impressive save to deny Christos Tzolis, whose effort was heading towards the bottom corner.

The Gunners remained organised defensively during the closing stages and successfully protected their narrow advantage.

The victory also secured another clean sheet for Arsenal, who recorded their eighth win in nine Premier League matches.

Arteta Praises Team’s Response

Arteta said the victory was particularly satisfying after Arsenal had gone so long without winning at Liverpool.

He praised the players and staff for their performance, describing the result as an important achievement for the club.

Iraola also acknowledged his team’s response after conceding the early goal but insisted that the season remained at an early stage.

The defeat left Liverpool in fifth place, nine points behind the league leaders, while Arsenal moved three points clear of Manchester City.

The result strengthened Arsenal’s position in the title race and dealt a significant setback to Liverpool’s hopes of challenging for the Premier League crown.
