azhar mahmood named red-ball head coach

lahore, the pakistan cricket board (pcb) on monday appointed former all-rounder azhar mahmood as the acting red-ball head coach of the pakistan men’s national team, following a series of unfruitful coaching experiments over the past two years.

azhar, a seasoned figure in pakistan cricket, steps into the role with extensive experience as both a player and coach. the pcb stated in its press release that he would continue in the position until the end of his current contract.

“the pakistan cricket board today announces azhar mahmood as the acting red-ball head coach of the pakistan men’s team,” the statement read.

azhar has previously served as assistant head coach and was recently head coach for the national team during the five-match t20i series against new zealand in april last year.

his appointment comes after the pcb’s decision in april to re-advertise the head coach position, following disappointing results under six different head coaches. the most recent interim head coach, aaqib javed, who held dual responsibilities as selector and coach, stepped down after pakistan’s underwhelming icc champions trophy campaign earlier this year.

highlighting azhar’s credentials, the pcb emphasized his international coaching exposure, tactical understanding, and success in england’s county cricket circuit. notably, he secured two county championship titles during his playing career, underscoring his strategic strengths and leadership abilities.

“his red-ball pedigree was underscored by two county championship titles, an achievement that speaks volumes about his leadership, tactical acumen and unwavering commitment to excellence,” the press release added.

the board expressed confidence that under azhar’s leadership, the red-ball squad would show improved discipline, performance, and growth on the international stage.

azhar’s reappointment is seen as a stabilizing move for the team’s test ambitions, with hopes that his familiarity with the players and system will bring consistency after a turbulent coaching phase.
