Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Asim Munir has been praised internationally for his role in facilitating diplomatic communication during rising tensions between the United States and Iran.
According to a report by Turkish media outlet TRT World, Pakistan emerged as one of the few countries trusted by both Washington and Tehran during a sensitive phase of regional escalation.
The report noted that Islamabad adopted a “quiet, disciplined and effective diplomatic approach” at a time when multiple regional players were competing for influence in West Asia.
Backchannel Diplomacy and Continuous Engagement
The report credited Field Marshal Asim Munir with maintaining indirect communication channels between the two sides. His approach reportedly focused on keeping dialogue alive and preventing a complete breakdown in communication between the United States and Iran.
It described his diplomatic style as pragmatic and steady, relying on consistency and low-profile engagement rather than public political messaging.
According to the report, this approach helped Pakistan position itself as a credible intermediary capable of engaging with both rival states.
Pakistan’s Strategic Position in Regional Politics
TRT World highlighted Pakistan’s unique geopolitical position, pointing to its geographical location and its diplomatic relations with multiple global and regional powers, including the US, China, Iran, Gulf countries, and Türkiye.
This broad network of relations, the report said, allows Pakistan to communicate across competing blocs without being fully aligned with any single side.
A US public policy expert, Laurie Watkins, was quoted as saying that countries gain diplomatic relevance when they are seen as neutral and useful to multiple sides during crises.

Views from Analysts and Former Officials
Former Pakistani Foreign Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan stated that international relevance often depends on being useful in critical moments, especially when rival powers require communication channels.
Retired Lieutenant General Muhammad Saeed also emphasized that diplomacy should be judged by outcomes rather than visibility, adding that the focus on sustained dialogue contributed to easing tensions.
The report further suggested that Pakistan’s regional standing improved following the 2025 military tensions with India after the Pahalgam incident in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, as well as the Pakistan-Saudi Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement signed in 2025.
Challenges Ahead for Pakistan
Despite acknowledging Pakistan’s growing diplomatic influence, the report also highlighted key challenges. It stressed that maintaining this role would require Pakistan to address internal political divisions and ongoing economic pressures.
Overall, the report portrays Pakistan as an emerging diplomatic connector in a highly volatile region, with Field Marshal Asim Munir’s role being central to maintaining communication channels during a period of heightened global tension.
