Islamabad: The recent heavy rainfall in Islamabad and Rawalpindi has worsened the flood situation, prompting authorities to issue a high alert across the region.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) have forecast more rainfall tonight and urged the public to remain on high alert. For further updates on NDMA warnings and rain alerts in Islamabad and Punjab, read this detailed report.
Rawal Dam’s water level has risen dangerously close to the overflow mark, leading to the opening of its spillways. This has increased the risk of water entering low-lying areas nearby.
The water levels in Nullah Lai and Nullah Korang continue to rise. Last night, the water level in Nullah Lai surpassed 16 feet, prompting emergency deployment of agencies including Rescue 1122, WASA, and the Pakistan Army’s 111 Brigade.
According to the Meteorological Department, the weather remained partly cloudy throughout the day, but heavy rain with thunder is expected late at night. Citizens have been advised to avoid venturing near streams or rivers and to contact 1122 immediately in case of emergency.
As a precaution against potential flooding, all tourist spots have been shut down with immediate effect. Travel to Murree, Naya Mori, Nathia Gali, Hunza, and other hill stations has been strictly prohibited due to the risk of landslides. The district administration has urged tourists to postpone their trips and avoid mountain routes under any circumstances.
The Rawalpindi district government has appealed to the public to strictly follow official instructions and ignore rumors. District hospitals, rescue centers, and emergency shelters have been placed on high alert.
The Meteorological Department warns that the monsoon spell may continue until July 25, and further rainfall could worsen the situation. NDMA has advised residents in low-lying areas to relocate to safer locations without delay.
