Islamabad: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a series of high-level meetings in Islamabad on Saturday with Pakistan’s top civilian and military leadership, as efforts intensify to revive stalled negotiations between the United States and Iran.

The discussions come at a crucial moment, with Islamabad once again playing a mediating role in attempts to ease tensions and restart diplomatic dialogue between the two rivals.

Key Meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office

The Iranian delegation met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the Prime Minister’s Office, where both sides discussed the evolving regional situation and ongoing peace efforts.

The high-level meeting was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir, reflecting the strategic importance Pakistan is placing on the diplomatic process.

According to official statements, the discussions focused on regional stability, ceasefire efforts, and ways to move forward with US–Iran engagement.

Meetings with Military Leadership

Earlier in the day, Foreign Minister Araghchi also met Field Marshal Asim Munir in Islamabad. Senior officials including National Security Adviser Asim Malik and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi were also present during the meeting, along with members of the Iranian delegation.

The inclusion of both civilian and military leadership highlights the sensitivity and strategic importance of the ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Pakistan’s Mediation Role in Focus

Islamabad has emerged as a key facilitator in recent US–Iran contacts. After helping broker a temporary ceasefire earlier this month, Pakistan hosted initial talks between the two sides, although those discussions ended without a final agreement.

Despite setbacks, Pakistan has continued diplomatic outreach to both Washington and Tehran, urging continued dialogue and restraint.

Background: Ongoing Regional Tensions

The talks come in the aftermath of a volatile period marked by military escalation and maritime tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. Issues such as Iran’s nuclear programme, missile capabilities, and maritime security remain central to negotiations.

A temporary ceasefire, reportedly facilitated by Pakistan, helped pause hostilities, but key disagreements prevented a comprehensive agreement during earlier rounds.

Continued International Engagement

Reports indicate that US envoys are also expected to travel to Pakistan for further discussions, underscoring Islamabad’s central role in facilitating indirect communication between the two sides.

Meanwhile, Iran has reiterated its position that diplomatic engagement must address all core concerns, while acknowledging Pakistan’s role in promoting dialogue.

While the latest meetings signal renewed diplomatic momentum, major challenges remain unresolved. However, Pakistan’s continued engagement suggests that efforts to bridge gaps between the United States and Iran are ongoing, with Islamabad positioned as a key diplomatic hub in the evolving regional landscape.
