Islamabad to Tighten Security at District Courts Complex
In response to growing security concerns, authorities in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, have decided to upgrade and tighten security at the District Courts Complex. The move aims to ensure the safety of judges, lawyers, litigants, and visitors, aligning the facility’s security with modern standards and evolving threats.
According to official sources, the decision was made during a high-level meeting focused on security arrangements at the courts. The meeting was attended by Islamabad High Court judges Justice Azam Khan and Justice Inam Amin Minhas, several District and Sessions Judges, and High Court Bar Association President Wajid Gilani, along with senior police officials.
High-Level Review of Security Arrangements
During the meeting, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Security and the AIG of the Special Branch delivered a comprehensive briefing on the current security situation and existing arrangements at the complex.
Officials highlighted potential vulnerabilities and discussed ways to eliminate loopholes in the system. The participants unanimously agreed that the safety of court personnel and the general public required immediate and practical upgrades.
To that end, several measures were approved to make the premises more secure and organized.
New Technology and Entry Point Reforms
As part of the new security plan, authorities will install advanced scanners and walkthrough gates at all entry points of the court complex. The equipment will help detect weapons or restricted items, ensuring that every visitor and their belongings go through complete security clearance.
In addition, it was decided to create zigzag barriers — a system designed to slow down vehicles approaching the gates. This configuration allows security personnel to conduct thorough vehicle inspections without obstructing traffic flow.
Officials believe these changes will enhance surveillance while maintaining accessibility for lawyers and the public.
Snipers and Emergency Preparedness Under Consideration
In a significant development, the meeting also discussed the possible deployment of snipers on rooftops around the court complex. While the proposal remains under review, it reflects heightened concern about potential threats and the need for rapid response capabilities in the event of an emergency.
Furthermore, a proposal was introduced to provide specialized training and mock drills for lawyers and court staff. The training would prepare them to handle emergency situations, such as security breaches or evacuations, with calm and coordination.
Discipline and Medical Readiness
To maintain discipline, it was also agreed that security personnel on duty would be restricted from unnecessary mobile phone use. Officials noted that this step would help ensure constant vigilance and prevent distractions during duty hours.
Recognizing the need for immediate medical support, the authorities also decided to station an ambulance outside the court complex at all times. This measure will ensure quick emergency response and medical assistance for anyone injured or taken ill within the premises.
Strengthening Security Amid Growing Threats
Islamabad’s judicial facilities have occasionally faced security incidents in the past. In 2014, a deadly attack on the Islamabad District Courts claimed the lives of several people, including a judge. Since then, security around judicial buildings has been a persistent concern.
By implementing these new measures, officials hope to restore confidence among legal professionals and visitors and demonstrate a commitment to maintaining order and safety.
