MINNEAPOLIS: Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kyler Murray suffered a concussion during his team’s 39-22 victory over the Green Bay Packers in the opening game of the NFL regular season on Sunday.

Murray exited the game early after sustaining the injury on the 11th play of Minnesota’s season opener. The Vikings’ medical staff evaluated and treated him before he was ruled out for the remainder of the game.

The quarterback was later seen in the postgame locker room talking with teammates and staff following the Vikings’ convincing win at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Murray under concussion protocol

Murray did not speak to reporters after the game because he was placed under the NFL’s concussion protocol.

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell provided an update on Murray’s condition, saying the quarterback appeared to be doing well around his teammates, while stressing that medical evaluations would determine his recovery timeline.

“He seemed to be doing pretty well, but I wouldn’t medically quote me on that,” O’Connell said, adding that the team would take Murray’s condition “day by day.”

Murray had earned Minnesota’s starting quarterback role during the offseason after signing a one-year contract with the Vikings in March.

The two-time Pro Bowl selection spent his first seven NFL seasons with the Arizona Cardinals after being selected No. 1 overall in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Murray’s injury history

The former Oklahoma standout won the 2018 Heisman Trophy and was named the Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2019.

Murray has completed 67.1% of his career passes for 20,460 yards, with 121 touchdowns and 60 interceptions.

The quarterback has also dealt with several significant injuries during his NFL career. He suffered a torn ACL in December 2022 that ended his season and limited him to eight appearances in 2023.

Last season, Murray played only five games after suffering a foot injury against the Tennessee Titans.

His latest concussion will now leave his availability for Minnesota’s next game uncertain as he goes through the NFL’s established concussion evaluation and return-to-play process.

Despite losing their starting quarterback early, the Vikings produced an emphatic performance against Green Bay, winning 39-22 to begin the regular season with a victory.
