Lahore: The Education Department of Lahore is actively considering the closure of government schools that are operating out of rented buildings. In this regard, an inspection committee has been formed to evaluate the situation in detail.
According to a notification issued by the Lahore Education Authority, Deputy DEOs Shahid Ali and Waseem Butt have been appointed as the heads of the committee. They will conduct a comprehensive review of the schools functioning in rented premises.
The committee has been tasked not only with inspecting the physical condition of the buildings but also assessing the number of teachers and students, the quality of education, and academic performance.
The notification also mentions that the rent for these buildings is being paid through the non-salary budget, putting an extra burden on the department’s financial resources. Therefore, the decision to continue or shut down these schools will be made based on performance and quality criteria.
According to sources, any school found to be underperforming may be completely closed, with students and teachers being relocated to nearby functional government schools.
The main objective behind this move is to make the education system more effective, high-quality, and financially sustainable. However, the authorities are also taking into account the potential reaction from parents and teachers regarding the closures.
