The Los Angeles County medical examiner has determined that Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke died from an accidental overdose involving heroin and cocaine, with multiple prescription medications also cited as a contributing condition.
Autopsy Reveals Cause of Death
NBA player Brandon Clarke died from an accidental drug overdose, according to the results of an autopsy released by the Los Angeles County medical examiner.
Clarke, 29, was found unresponsive at his home in the San Fernando Valley on the evening of May 11. Paramedics responded to the residence but were unable to revive him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The medical examiner’s office announced the findings on Friday, August 7, stating that the official cause of death was an accidental overdose caused by the effects of heroin and cocaine.
Prescription Medications Also Cited
The medical examiner’s report also identified the combined effects of multiple prescription medications as another significant condition associated with Clarke’s death.
However, authorities did not publicly specify which prescription drugs were involved.
The findings provide an official explanation for the unexpected death of the professional basketball player, whose passing shocked teammates, fans and the wider NBA community.
Seven-Season Career With Memphis
Clarke spent his entire NBA career with the Memphis Grizzlies, becoming an important part of the team’s rebuilding period alongside stars such as Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr..
He was selected in the first round of the 2019 NBA Draft after playing college basketball at Gonzaga University.
During the 2019-20 season, his rookie campaign, Clarke finished fourth in NBA Rookie of the Year voting, establishing himself as one of the promising young players in the league.

Across 309 NBA appearances, Clarke averaged 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.

Clarke suffered a serious Achilles injury in 2023, followed by another Achilles-related setback in 2024 that kept him out of action for approximately a full calendar year.
He later dealt with additional knee and calf problems, which significantly restricted his availability.
During his final NBA season, Clarke was limited to just two appearances, as injuries continued to affect his playing career.
