The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a flood alert for several areas in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir, warning of heavy rainfall and the risk of flash floods between July 28 and July 31.
According to NDMA, regions including Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza, and Shigar are expected to receive torrential rains, which has already triggered emergency rescue operations across Gilgit-Baltistan due to early flash floods and weather-related hazards.
The authority further stated that monsoon winds are expected to enter the country starting today, which could intensify the rainfall across various regions. In areas such as Chitral, Booni, and Reshun, there is a heightened risk of river swelling due to glacial melting, potentially causing dangerous rises in the Chitral River.
NDMA has also warned of possible landslides in mountainous regions, especially those prone to slope instability. Urban areas of Muzaffarabad and Bagh are particularly at risk of flash flooding, and local authorities have been instructed to remain on high alert and ensure all preventive and emergency measures are in place.
It’s important to note that each year during the monsoon season, these regions face severe threats due to heavy rains and glacial melt, prompting NDMA to issue early warnings and emphasize preparedness to minimize potential loss of life and property.
