Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide weather alert warning of thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, strong winds, and dust storms across several parts of Pakistan over the next 12 to 24 hours.

According to the advisory, the prevailing weather system could trigger urban flooding, flash floods, landslides, and even glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in vulnerable mountainous regions. Authorities have particularly cautioned that areas with active glaciers and unstable terrain remain at heightened risk due to seasonal temperature changes.

Regions likely to be affected

The NDMA forecast indicates that Punjab and Islamabad are expected to experience rainfall in districts including Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Multan, Jhelum, Gujrat, Sahiwal, Okara, Bahawalpur, and several surrounding areas.

In Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, thunderstorms and rain are expected in Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza, Astore, Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, and other nearby regions.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is also likely to be affected, with rainfall predicted in Chitral, Swat, Dir, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Peshawar, Mardan, Kohat, and various tribal districts. Meanwhile, parts of Balochistan and upper Sindh may also witness isolated rainfall accompanied by strong winds and dust storms.

Risk of flash floods and GLOFs

The NDMA has warned that the most serious threat remains flash flooding in low-lying and mountainous regions. In northern areas, the risk of glacial lake outburst floods could lead to sudden surges of water, debris flows, and landslides, potentially disrupting road connectivity and damaging infrastructure.

Officials stressed that weak structures, riverbanks, and rain-fed streams could become particularly dangerous during intense downpours.

Emergency preparedness and official directives

The NDMA has instructed all provincial and district administrations to remain on high alert and ensure readiness of rescue teams and emergency response units.

Continuous monitoring of vulnerable zones is underway, and authorities have been directed to take precautionary measures to minimise potential damage and loss of life.

Tourists and travellers have been strongly advised to avoid unnecessary travel, especially to northern regions, and to check weather updates and road conditions before departure.

Public safety guidance

Citizens have been urged to stay away from rivers, streams, and flood-prone areas during heavy rainfall. In case of emergency, they are advised to contact local rescue services immediately.

The NDMA also encouraged the public to use its official “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” mobile application for real-time updates and safety advisories.

Overall, officials emphasised that while the current weather pattern is consistent with seasonal forecasts, its intensity in certain regions could pose serious risks, making preparedness and caution essential in the coming days.
