Saudi Arabia’s air defences intercepted a ballistic missile fired by Yemen’s Houthi group toward the kingdom’s Eastern Province early Thursday, the Saudi-led coalition said.

Coalition spokesman Turki Al-Maliki announced the interception on the social media platform X but did not provide further details about the missile or its intended target. No casualties or damage were reported in the announcement.

Civil Defence Issues All-Clear

Before the interception was announced, Saudi Civil Defence issued an early warning alert in the Eastern Province over an unspecified threat.

Authorities subsequently issued an all-clear for the Eastern Province and Najran, indicating that the immediate alert had ended.

The announcements came amid heightened security concerns following a series of reported missile launches targeting Saudi territory.

Previous Missile Interceptions Reported

On Wednesday, the Saudi-led coalition said it had intercepted and destroyed a Houthi ballistic missile launched toward Taif, a city in western Saudi Arabia.

Late Tuesday, debris from two intercepted Houthi ballistic missiles reportedly damaged a building, a construction project and a vehicle in Riyadh, according to Saudi Civil Defence. Its statement did not report any casualties.

The latest interception adds to a series of incidents involving missiles launched toward Saudi Arabia, raising concerns about the potential expansion of hostilities across the region.

Houthis Claim Attack on Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura Oil Refinery

Background to the Saudi-Houthi Conflict

Saudi Arabia has led a military coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognised government against the Houthi movement since March 2015.

The intervention followed the Houthis’ seizure of Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, and other parts of the country in 2014.

The conflict has continued for years, involving regional powers and causing a prolonged humanitarian crisis in Yemen.

The latest reported missile interception underscores the continuing security challenges facing Saudi Arabia as tensions with the Houthi movement persist.
