TV Anchor, Family Among Tourists Swept Away by Flash Flood in Babusar

Shocking Incident Leaves At Least 15 Missing in Gilgit-Baltistan; Rescue Operations Hampered by Harsh Weather

Gilgit: A tragic flash flood in the Babusar area of Gilgit-Baltistan has swept away several tourist families, including private TV channel anchor Shabana Liaqat — a heartbreaking reminder of the rising threat of floods across the country, such as the recent incident in Islamabad where a father and daughter were swept away.

According to Faizullah, spokesperson for the Gilgit-Baltistan government, the incident occurred on July 21 when Shabana Liaqat, affiliated with Khyber TV, was visiting Babusar with her family. Following heavy rainfall, a sudden and destructive flood engulfed their vehicle, leaving them and others missing.

Identity Documents Recovered from Debris

Rescue officials confirmed that evidence of the missing family surfaced when search teams discovered a purse from the debris. The purse contained CNICs and cash belonging to Shabana Liaqat, her husband Liaqat, and their children.

The family was officially reported missing by Liaqat’s relatives, prompting the launch of a search and rescue operation.

Fears of Rising Number of Missing Tourists

Spokesperson Faizullah stated that, so far, at least 15 tourists have been reported missing due to the flash flood. However, the number is feared to rise as several vehicles and tents were swept away by the raging waters.

Rescue Efforts Continue Amid Harsh Conditions

Authorities report that ongoing rain, rough terrain, and poor weather are significantly hindering rescue efforts. Drones and sniffer dogs are being used in the operation, alongside local volunteers and rescue teams stationed at the disaster site.

Officials also revealed that scientific methods such as DNA sampling are being considered to aid in the identification and search for missing persons.
