Heavy rains in western Sudan have triggered a devastating landslide in the Marra Mountains, killing at least 1,000 people, according to reports.
The tragedy occurred in the Marra mountain region, where days of intense rainfall caused the ground to give way, severely affecting the village of Trasin. The Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) reported that most of the village was destroyed by the landslide.
Initial information indicates that nearly 1,000 residents of the village lost their lives, with only one survivor reported so far. The SLM has called on the United Nations and international aid organizations to assist in the rescue operations and recovery of bodies.
This disaster adds to a growing list of deadly landslides caused by heavy rains in the region, including recent incidents in Kashmir and Uttarakhand.
Humanitarian agencies are now urgently needed to respond to the crisis and provide aid to the affected population.
